BS Electrical Engineering - MAS Electrical and Computer Engineering

Program Description

The objective of this program is to enable interested undergraduate students in electrical engineering to integrate completion of their Bachelor of Science program with continuation into a professional master's degree in electrical and computer engineering, the Master of Electrical and Computer Engineering. This will enable completion of the combined BS/MAS in five years. Students enter the co-terminal program going into their third year of study, and they plan the fourth year of studies so that it leads into and supports their planned area of emphasis during the fifth year. The program encourages qualified IIT undergraduates to complete graduate studies at IIT and enter professional practice having attained a master's level education.

The undergraduate portion of the curriculum for this co-terminal degree program puts emphasis on both theory and practical applications of electrical engineering. Electrical engineering is concerned with electric power, radio, radar, television, computing, telecommunication, control and information systems. Electrical engineers find solutions to the challenging technical problems that arise in our rapidly changing society. They impact virtually every aspect of daily life, as evidenced by examples such as wireless communications, audio and video equipment, power distribution, computerized traffic control, noise pollution monitoring and abatement, and medical instrumentation. Students acquire a solid background in engineering science and mathematics, followed by a sequence of core courses in electrical engineering. Design skills are fostered in the professional elective courses in the senior year, along with the project experience instilled by Interprofessional Projects (IPROs).

The objectives of the Bachelor of Science component of this co-terminal degree program are to produce electrical engineering graduates who are prepared to

  • enter their profession and make intellectual contributions to it,
  • embark on a lifelong career of personal and professional growth,
  • take advanced courses at the graduate level.

The graduate portion of the curriculum for this co-terminal degree provides advanced study in preparation for leading edge industry positions in the professional practice of electrical and computer engineering. Students arrange a program of study in consultation with their academic advisor and typically elect to build their program to emphasize one or more areas of specialization. No formal distribution requirements are imposed. Areas of specialization include communication systems, computer communication, computer engineering, power electronics, electromagnetics, electronics, VLSI and microelectronics, power systems, and signal and image processing.

The following requirements should be satisfied

  • Minimum GPA required to enroll in the program: 3.2
  • Minimum GPA required to stay in the program: 3.0
  • Minimum credit hours of completed course work at IIT:  60
  • For students transferring into junior year, they must complete at least one semester at IIT as full time student.
